So many of us have dreams of breaking into the fashion industry and making our mark. So many of us also don’t know where to start. To give you a little direction on how to make progress towards becoming a successful fashion designer here are a few things you should figure out first.

Understand the extent of your Dream

Before you can do anything you have to be able to fully realize your dream. Do you just want to start a fashion label that is easy to manage daily or do you want to build a fashion empire that will require non stop work? While both will take hard work and dedication the empire will take a lot more. Decide on the end goal and write it out in as much detail as possible. Then look at where you are now and fill in the gaps on how you can reach the end goal.

Once you have built your business plan then you can start making boss moves and the best way to go about that is through these main 3 steps.

  1. The Pre-Production Steps
  2. The Full Production Run
  3. Marketing and Distribution

Pre-Production Steps

  • Do your research and understand what all needs to be done
  • To get things started you want to trademark your brand and ensure all legal rights.
  • Set a budget to finance your start up
  • Determine resources and materials needed
  • Create patterns
  • Create Samples

“One way to preempt disputes is to have a legal confidentiality agreement and a development agreement ready. Also, if you’re using unique patterns or fabric designs, you might want to consider trademarking them. Yes, that’s right: patterns are considered intellectual property and fit into the trademark purview rather than being considered patentable.” According to Inc.com article by Christine Lagorio-Chafkin

Full Production Run

  • Find Manufacturer
  • Production Quality: Ensure that the manufacturer is making products to our liking.
  • Make improvements to designs and patterns as needed.

Marketing & Distribution

  • Get photographs of products
  • Build a website
  • Launch your brand on as many social media platforms as possible and gain a following
  • Create an event to launch brand such as a pop up shop or fashion show
  • Utilize brand ambassadors such as bloggers, influencers to promote your brand.

Along this journey there will be  a lot of trial an error, but persistence and handwork will lead you to your goal. While following these steps you should also seek relationships with those who can positively impact your journey such as a mentor and support group. In addition to that, you should always be working to build your network and maintain relationships so that you can maintain as well as grow support for your brand overtime.

“When you have a passion for something then you tend not only to be better at it, but you work harder at it too.”
